Signal
A signal is an observable, patterned change in a medium, behavior or attribute that can be distinguished from background variation and interpreted by a receiver as information about an underlying state or characteristic. In social and economic contexts, signals are often deliberately or strategically produced under conditions of information asymmetry, with their credibility grounded in costs, constraints, or shared social norms that make them harder for some actors to mimic than others.
